Dr. Samira Samira Mirbagher Ajorpaz is an assistant professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University, where she is the director of the microarchitectural performance and security lab. She received her BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Isfahan in 2014 and her PhD in Computer Science from Texas A&M University in 2019, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of California San Diego. She is also a 2021 MIT ECE Rising Star. Her research is multidisciplinary and is centred at the intersection of Computer Architecture, Computer Systems Security, and Machine Learning, with a focus on designing fast, energy efficient and secure microarchitectural units with nano-second scale timing margins. Dr Ajorpaz has a passion for chess and teaching. As a child, she won the youth chess championship four times in her home country, Iran (old name Persia), where playing chess has a long history and is very popular. She first learned chess from her dad at age six and uncle Ali, who she spent a lot of time playing chess with. Her grandmother taught her many other cardboard games, as well as the concepts of "sacrifices" and "building multi-way traps" in chess, which turned out to be her style in playing chess. Usually when a player makes a sacrifice she gets a surge of adrenaline. She likes taking a risk. Sacrifices and traps make chess exciting. Especially when she has sacrificed something immediate to gain something greater. Once she found her way to the national championship, she benefited from the states team professional chess coach (a Russian teacher who took her skills to another level); that's where she learned other chess strategies and analyses during the summer camps, and won national silver and two gold medals in youth championships three years in a row. At the age of 13, Samira stopped competing professionally in chess, but she never stopped playing chess as her hobby, as there is always more to learn in chess and more to learn from chess (that is applicable to life), and nothing is more enjoyable to Samira than learning, playing and teaching. class description
