Nicholas Stewart Nicholas Stewart graduated from Appalachian State University in August 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Religion Studies. During his time at App State, Nick helped revive the Appalachian State University Chess Club which hadn’t been active since the 1950s. With Nick’s help recruiting new members, the group grew to over 150 college students, professors, kids, parents, and more. The friendships he made in App State chess club, and the newfound competitive environment, invigorated his ambition to get better at chess. He had been playing seriously for only a couple years. Although he had learned how to play as a kid, it wasn’t until strong players at the club had taken him under their wing that he really began to take to heart the saying about chess “15 minutes to learn, lifetime to master”. Nick became one of the club’s most active members, never missing a meeting and competing for the club in chess tournaments, online and in person. Nick would rise to the position of club president and eventually pass on the club and his position when he graduated. The App State chess club is still flourishing. Nick went on to find a job working at the Charlotte Chess Center, where he still works currently as a chess teacher and as a tournament director. He is an active United States Chess Federation player and plays online everyday, and in over the board rated games weekly. On chess.com, the most popular chess site, he has risen to 98th percentile.
