STEM Teacher Bio
Ms.Juanita, Duke School STEM Program instructor
I am motivated by success. Success can come in many forms. I feel success when my students enter my class three grades below grade level and leave mastering the 7th grade standards. I feel success when my students EXCEED growth on the math STAAR/End-of-Grade testing for the state of Texas/North Carolina (a feat only a few teachers are able to achieve). I feel success when I see the hope, motivation, and praise I pour in my students result in them being more confident in their STEM skills. Success is a component of the story behind my business. After graduating from college with aspirations of becoming a computer engineer, I was faced with a dilemma. I could pursue a career in computer engineering, or I could accept an offer to teach a computer class at a small catholic school in El Paso, Texas. Prior to enrolling in a graduate program, I had spent six years teaching math. I adored that position and realized I wanted to make a difference in my students lives by being one of the most nurturing teachers they ever encountered. I thought back to the time I was a student and encountered ineffective teachers and the negative effect it had on me. I wanted to be one of the good teachers. I wanted to be effective and successful! My business allows me to do that and more. I will be able to incorporate all the successful strategies I learned as an educator to produce diverse, future learners that will change the world by equipping them with a STEM education. An effective STEM education creates critical thinking, enables students to make connections between math and technology, and will ultimately lead the next generation of innovators.
